Gangwon Winter Dalgwa 'Olympian Family'

Alexandra Auberstoltz of Italy, 17, who won the gold medal in the women's two-seater and silver in the women's single-seater luge at the 2024 Winter Youth Olympics in Gangwon Province, said, "I trained with my coach while watching this competition, and I feel rewarded." Then, the question "Isn't your coach your father?" followed.

In fact, the Italian women's team is being led by coach Christian Auberstoltz, Alexandra's father. "Olympic medals have been my lifelong dream. I could not achieve that dream in the end, but I think my daughter did it for me, which is very special," Christian said. She has performed in four Winter Olympics since the 2002 Salt Lake City Games, but never made it to the podium.

Alexandra's mother, Anastasia, 43, is also an Olympian. Anastasia fell in love with her Italian coach Christian at the Salt Lake City Games, where she represented Russia. Having gained Italian nationality after marriage, she participated in the 2006 Torino Olympics in her new homeland with her husband. Anastasia has never won a medal at an Olympics.

Alexandra said, "In fact, when I first said I would do luge, both my dad and mom were against it. Interestingly, my grandparents all opposed to my mom and dad doing luge. But in the end, they met because of luge."

"I knew better than anyone else that this sport was dangerous, so I couldn't take the lead in recommending it," coach Christian said. "I didn't want my daughter to repeat the mistakes I made (in the Olympics) ahead of the big competition. I have to keep focused. I'm really proud of my daughter." If Alexandra competes in the 2026 Milan-Cortina d'Ampezzo Olympics, she will be able to set a record of participating in the 'Olympics in Anbang' after generations.

Manuel Weissensteiner (16) of the Italian national team, who won two gold medals in men's two-seater and team luge at the Youth Olympics, is also the second generation of sleighs. Zelda, 55, his mother, is the first Italian to win an Olympic medal in two sports. Zelda won a gold medal in luge at the 1994 Lillehammer Games and a bronze in bobsleigh at the 2006 Torino Games. "I will only do luge," Manuel said with a smile. Manuel is competing in a two-seater race in a pair with Philippe Brunner (18) who came to learn luge from her mother six years ago. Analysts say that the two athletes will definitely participate in the 2026 Olympics.

Maya Voigt, 17, of Denmark, who won the gold medal in women's monobots (single-seater) in bobsleigh, is also on a run toward her father's dream. "My daughter is fast like me," said Peter, president of the Federation of Bobsleigh and Skeleton in Denmark. Peter was an athlete in track and field and bobsleigh, but failed to make it to the Olympics. Maya, who won all the first and sixth competitions of the IBSF Youth Series this season, is showing off her overwhelming skills by ranking first in all eight of the competitions, as well as in the first and second rounds of the finals.

Jacob (18) and Katrina Schmidt (16) of Denmark, who are participating in curling, are also challenging for Olympic medals, which their parents had never won. The Danish national team coach Uliq Schmidt (62), the father of the siblings, participated in two Olympics, and his mother Lisa Richardson (58) participated in one, but they failed to win a medal. The siblings, who won the bronze medal at the Under-21 World Championships last year, are considered strong candidates for medals at this year's event as well.

Romy Ertle, 17, is also a rising star in the alpine skiing competition. Her mother is Martina, 51, who won three medals (two silver and one bronze) in alpine skiing in five Olympics. Romy won her first medal in the women's super combine (super competition + rotation) in alpine skiing.
